The Stoyan Bachvarov Drama Theatre is a repertory theatre. For nine decades, it has maintained a successful dialogue with its audience, seeking new forms of theatrical expression while staging works ranging from world and Bulgarian classics to contemporary drama. Each season, the theatre features 14 productions in its repertoire—including six premieres—and welcomes 3,500 spectators to its auditoriums every month.
While the Varna theatre caters to all age groups, it places a special emphasis on productions aimed at young audiences. In recent years, young Bulgarian directors and set designers have found a receptive environment and opportunities to realize unconventional creative projects on the Varna stage. The theatre also hosts the Varna Summer International Theatre Festival, held annually from June 1 to June 12.
Many renowned actors began their careers on the Varna stage. Today, the permanent acting ensemble comprises 22 actors; the troupe is strong and professional, boasting a wide creative range. Leading Bulgarian directors enjoy working at the theatre, drawn by the positive working atmosphere and the intergenerational creative harmony that have been cultivated over the years.
The Varna Drama Theatre is young in spirit, embracing the challenges of the times and contemporary artistic trends. It is unafraid to venture beyond the familiar and transcend traditional conceptions of theatre. Its goal is to create a production capable of worthily participating in the dialogue between the cultures of the European Community countries.
