Synopsis:
RITA is a tragicomedy that delicately and ironically explores the difficulty of “letting go” of the people we love. It questions the meaning of dignity in life and death, raising profound and uncomfortable questions about the legitimacy of making decisions on behalf of others. Through witty dialogue and unexpected situations, Marta Buchaca leads us into an intimate microcosm shaped by silences, vulnerabilities, unspoken truths, and the constant search for a fragile balance.
Toni and Julia are siblings. Toni is impulsive and accustomed to looking for shortcuts; Julia, on the other hand, is insecure and reluctant to make definitive decisions. When the veterinarian advises Toni to put down his dog, Rita, their roles are reversed: Julia proves surprisingly determined, while Toni reveals an unexpected vulnerability. This shift sparks a much deeper confrontation, involving their mother and bringing long-suppressed tensions
to the surface.
The characters are brought to life by Denis Fontanari and Monica Garavello, under the direction of Alberto Giusta, a director renowned for his sensitivity and his ability to explore the emotional nuances of a text. With Rita, Giusta offers a contemporary and engaging interpretation of Buchaca’s work, highlighting both its emotional power and its subtle comic undertones.
